What we learned this week while reporting, from the rollback of a major U.S. fuel economy standard for cars and trucks to seven Virginia tribes withdrawing from formal engagement with the Chesapeake Bay Program after their requests for signatory status were denied. Here’s your roundup of headlines this past week.

The UK sustainable construction agenda is being held back by a critical evidence gap on recycled and secondary aggregates. An 18-year absence of national survey data weakens circular economy in construction policy, sustainable material specification and the wider shift to low carbon construction materials. Current information on volumes, regional supply and quality standards is essential if recycled aggregates are to support green infrastructure, resource efficiency in construction, end-of-life reuse in construction and credible carbon footprint reduction across major projects.
New findings from more than 4,500 damp and mould surveys show that environmental sustainability in construction must extend beyond embodied carbon and embodied carbon in materials. Poor fabric performance, inadequate ventilation and moisture risk undermine energy-efficient buildings, low carbon building outcomes and occupant health. Retrofit and sustainable building design need whole life carbon assessment, lifecycle assessment and life cycle thinking in construction, not isolated insulation upgrades that damage building lifecycle performance.
The Building Safety Act is accelerating demand for verifiable product information, stronger accountability and better digital handover. This strengthens the audit trail behind sustainable building practices, green building products, environmental product declarations (EPDs), low embodied carbon materials and whole life carbon claims. BIM data that operators can use is becoming central to life cycle cost control, maintenance planning and the performance of net zero carbon buildings in occupation.
Green construction is moving from aspiration to verification. Whole life carbon, net zero whole life carbon, low carbon design, eco-design for buildings and circular construction strategies now depend on reliable data, not marketing claims. Frameworks such as BREEAM and BREEAM v7 will place greater pressure on project teams to demonstrate the carbon footprint of construction, the environmental impact of construction and the practical route to decarbonising the built environment. Carbon neutral construction, eco-friendly construction and sustainable urban development will be judged by measured outcomes across design, specification, operation and reuse.
