Climate Reality 22 days ago

Twenty years ago, former Vice President @algore went on the TODAY show to announce a new project that would become our organization, The Climate Reality Project, with a mission to train people of all ages and backgrounds to share the truth of the climate crisis and how we solve it. At this year’s #ClimateWeekNYC, he sat down with @alroker for a conversation about how that project has grown into @climatereality’s network of 4.5 million people around the world driving action. He reflected on the progress we’ve made, our continued need to overcome the influence of the fossil fuel industry and political forces slowing climate solutions, the growing promise of renewable energy, and the people around the world continuing to push for real change. The conversation was a reminder of the work that must continue – building the political will, collective action, and momentum necessary to accelerate the clean energy transition and create a better future for people and our planet.

Sustainable construction is moving from voluntary ambition to operational necessity, with regulation, resource risk and climate resilience reshaping design decisions. Holcim’s Aquasave programme, focused on cutting freshwater withdrawals across concrete plants, shows that environmental sustainability in construction can no longer be measured by carbon alone.

Whole life carbon, embodied carbon and whole life carbon assessment remain central to low carbon design, but water use, local ecological pressure and resource efficiency in construction are becoming material risks for contractors, clients and investors.

Green concrete and low carbon construction materials are now being judged through broader lifecycle assessment, linking the carbon footprint of construction with water stress, supply-chain exposure and building lifecycle performance. This strengthens the case for sustainable material specification, environmental product declarations (EPDs), low embodied carbon materials and circular economy in construction models that prioritise end-of-life reuse in construction. Circular construction strategies are becoming essential to reduce embodied carbon in materials and support net zero whole life carbon outcomes.

The forthcoming CIBSE TM59:2026 overheating assessment framework signals a major shift in UK design governance. Sustainable building design must now address heat risk, public health, insurance exposure and retrofit performance, not just energy demand. Energy-efficient buildings, low carbon building standards and eco-design for buildings will need to place summer resilience alongside carbon footprint reduction, life cycle cost and comfort. Sustainable design is becoming a liveability requirement, not a marketing claim.

Planning reform for data centres raises a sharper test for green construction. Faster approvals may support digital growth, but data centres place heavy demands on power, water, land and cooling infrastructure. Without tougher performance expectations, accelerated delivery risks increasing the environmental impact of construction and undermining net zero carbon buildings. Low-impact construction, green infrastructure and sustainable urban development must form part of the approval process for high-demand assets.

The UK’s Climate and Nature Security Taskforce reinforces the view that climate impacts are systemic risks for the built environment. Decarbonising the built environment now means designing for heat, water scarcity, coastal erosion, material volatility and supply-chain fragility. BREEAM, BREEAM v7, life cycle thinking in construction and circular economy principles are likely to gain greater importance as developers seek credible pathways to net zero carbon, carbon neutral construction and long-term resilience. Sustainable building practices, renewable building materials, green building products and eco-friendly construction are becoming baseline expectations in a sector where sustainability is no longer optional.
