For years experts have warned us that global dependence on fossil fuels would change our environment in ways that are incompatible with life. If you’re in a heatwave, watch out for these signs of heat stroke
- Body temp of 103°F or higher
- Confusion, slurred speech, or fainting
- Hot, red, dry skin (or no sweating)
- Rapid pulse and severe headache
- Nausea or vomiting
If you recognize these signs, act immediately: Call 911. Move the person to a cool place. Begin cooling them with water or ice while you wait for help.
Heat stroke can cause permanent damage or death within minutes. Here’s some ways you can try to stay cool and safe during heatwaves:
- Hydrate constantly!!! Don’t wait until you’re thirsty
- Stay indoors during peak heat (10am–4pm)
- Close blinds and curtains to block out sun. Blackout curtains and persianas help a lot
- Wear loose, light-colored clothing
- Take cool showers or use damp cloths on your neck and wrists
- Skip caffeine, and alcohol (they dehydrate you)
- NEVER leave kids or pets in a parked car
- Check on elderly neighbors and anyone living alone
