The International Union for Conservation of Nature has, for the first time, produced a global assessment of shallow warm-water coral reefs as part of its Red List of Ecosystems initiative, which is designed to guide and encourage conservation efforts before irreparable loss occurs. Its findings are “alarming,” said Susanne Pedersen, the Union’s director of the Centre for Science and Knowledge.
Scientists say changing the trajectory for coral reefs will require urgent action to reduce carbon emissions and expanded conservation efforts, including those aimed at reducing local threats like pollution and overfishing.
“It must serve as a renewed call to action on climate change and other drivers of biodiversity loss to save the world’s coral reef ecosystems,” said Pedersen.

The sustainable construction agenda is shifting from aspiration to delivery, with policy, finance, climate risk and materials scrutiny converging around whole life carbon, embodied carbon and lifecycle assessment. Proposed UK Green Book reforms could strengthen the investment case for linked housing, transport and infrastructure, supporting sustainable urban development and green infrastructure where place-based appraisal recognises life cycle cost, building lifecycle performance and long-term public value. For developers, this would move low carbon design, sustainable building design and net zero carbon buildings closer to mainstream viability.
Europe’s €3.4bn allocation from carbon-pricing revenues for clean technology projects could accelerate decarbonising the built environment, particularly in energy-intensive supply chains. The construction sector needs funding to scale low carbon construction materials, green building materials, renewable building materials and low embodied carbon materials from pilot stage to bankable deployment. Green concrete, cleaner manufacturing and verified environmental product declarations (EPDs) will be central to reducing the carbon footprint of construction and addressing embodied carbon in materials.
Climate adaptation is becoming a core test of competence for sustainable design. Rising UK flood risk is forcing developers, insurers and public authorities to reassess design standards, passive survivability, nature-based drainage and energy-efficient buildings. Sustainable building practices now need to combine mitigation and resilience, using whole life carbon assessment, life cycle thinking in construction and resource efficiency in construction to ensure assets can withstand future climate conditions while supporting net zero whole life carbon.
Regulatory pressure on construction product supply chains is also intensifying. The EU investigation into alleged PVC dumping shows that green construction, eco-friendly construction and sustainable material specification are now linked to trade policy, carbon policy and industrial strategy. Cheaper imported products may reduce short-term costs, but scrutiny of provenance, performance and environmental impact of construction is rising. Circular economy principles, circular economy in construction, end-of-life reuse in construction and circular construction strategies are becoming essential to credible carbon footprint reduction, low-impact construction and environmental sustainability in construction.
BREEAM, BREEAM v7, eco-design for buildings and sustainable architecture are increasingly aligned with a broader market demand for accountable, measurable sustainability. Sustainable construction is no longer a specialist discipline; it is becoming the operating framework for financing, approving, procuring, insuring and delivering low carbon building assets and carbon neutral construction across the global built environment.
