Thank you, Climate Reality Project, for having me as a speaker at the Climate Reality Leadership Training in Singapore! It’s such a full circle moment for me as a former participant in 2018 in Tokyo and now coming back as a speaker in 2026.
I’ve spoken in big spaces before, but my most favorite is where my family is in the audience.
It’s so nice to be back in Asia, and to see familiar faces again and meet the new climate leaders. It feels energizing how this new generation is doing amazing work in their own communities already!
And I couldn’t have asked for a better panel to share the stage with — Zal, Nazca, and Dr. Amanda were incredible. Truly the best group I could’ve asked for! 🌱
Sustainable construction is moving from voluntary ambition to financial, regulatory and insurance-led discipline. More than 830 companies and investors have committed to TNFD nature-risk disclosure, including investors with $26trn under management, signalling that environmental sustainability in construction, biodiversity protection and land-use impacts are becoming core tests for finance. Developers pursuing net zero carbon buildings, net zero whole life carbon and credible sustainable building design will need stronger whole life carbon assessment, lifecycle assessment and life cycle cost evidence to prove building lifecycle performance and manage the carbon footprint of construction.
Physical climate risk is reshaping design assumptions. Severe drought in southern England has triggered tougher Environment Agency scrutiny of corporate water use, creating direct pressure on contractors, product manufacturers and materials suppliers. Satellite evidence of uneven urban subsidence, with parts of Jakarta sinking by up to 7cm a year, shows why sustainable urban development, green infrastructure, low carbon design and resilient sustainable architecture require street-level ground, drainage and climate-risk data. Insurers are retreating from some climate exposures, making sustainability a condition of cover, finance and permission to build.
Materials transparency is becoming a competitive advantage. A new timber pricing and supply-chain data platform for UK staircase manufacturers, housebuilders and specifiers reflects rising demand for renewable building materials, green building materials, green building products and low embodied carbon materials. Better data can support sustainable material specification, environmental product declarations (epds), embodied carbon in materials and substitution away from carbon-intensive steel and concrete. It strengthens circular economy in construction, resource efficiency in construction, end-of-life reuse in construction and circular construction strategies by making low carbon construction materials commercially measurable rather than merely desirable.
Policy pressure is tightening across the built environment. Business and energy groups’ defence of the EU carbon market matters for decarbonising the built environment, especially cement, steel and other embodied carbon-heavy inputs. BREEAM, BREEAM v7, eco-design for buildings, sustainable design, low-impact construction, energy-efficient buildings and sustainable building practices are increasingly tied to whole life carbon, embodied carbon, net zero carbon, carbon footprint reduction and life cycle thinking in construction. Green construction, eco-friendly construction and carbon neutral construction will be judged less by marketing claims and more by disclosure, insurance viability, water resilience, material data and verified reductions in the environmental impact of construction.
