Desde la experiencia de Fundación Tantí y a partir del trabajo de investigación-acción que busca conectar las realidades locales con los debates globales en torno a la crisis climática y la transición energética, Ramón compartirá un análisis sobre los impactos que experimentan los territorios del Desierto de Atacama, expuestos a los impactos del cambio climático y a la expansión acelerada de proyectos minero-energéticos asociados a la transición.
Este será un espacio para el diálogo y el aprendizaje colectivo, donde reflexionaremos sobre las brechas de conocimiento y las barreras institucionales para una transición socioecológica con justicia territorial, así como sobre la importancia de la participación comunitaria y una acción climática construida desde los conocimientos y las formas de vida locales.

🌎Ramón Balcázar M., Founder and Executive Director of Fundación Tantí, will be a speaker on the panel “The Way Forward: Safeguards to Ensure a Just Transition” at the Climate Reality Leadership Training, to be held in Santiago from July 9 to 11.
Drawing from Fundación Tantí’s experience and based on action-research that seeks to connect local realities with global debates around the climate crisis and energy transition, Ramón will share an analysis of the impacts experienced by the territories of the Atacama Desert, exposed to the effects of climate change and the rapid expansion of mining-energy projects associated with the transition.
This will be a space for dialogue and collective learning, where we will reflect on knowledge gaps and institutional barriers to a socio-ecological transition with territorial justice, as well as on the importance of community participation and climate action built from local knowledge and ways of life.

BloombergNEF’s new estimate that the UK, EU and Norway must mobilise about $1.3 trillion a year raises the stakes for the built environment. Mass retrofit, electrified heat and grid upgrades now need to deliver net zero whole life carbon and net zero carbon buildings, guided by whole life carbon assessment, lifecycle assessment and clear targets for whole life carbon, embodied carbon and the carbon footprint of construction. Investment choices should be rooted in life cycle cost, building lifecycle performance and resource efficiency in construction, aligning sustainable building design, sustainable design and eco-design for buildings with practical delivery at scale.
The UK move to end support for small‑scale biomass after Renewables Obligation contracts shifts the centre of gravity for heat to energy‑efficient buildings, heat pumps and cleaner networks. Low carbon design and low carbon building retrofit will depend on sustainable material specification, low carbon construction materials and low embodied carbon materials, evidenced through environmental product declarations (epds). Clients are turning to breeam and breeam v7 to benchmark environmental sustainability in construction and to procure green building materials and green building products that meet net zero carbon goals.
A deep underground nuclear reactor proposal in the US clearing a federal safety hurdle signals potential for compact, reliable clean power to de‑risk electrification for energy‑intensive construction sites and materials producers when variable renewable generation is constrained. Such baseload can support decarbonising the built environment, carbon neutral construction and circular economy in construction by enabling recycling, end-of-life reuse in construction and low-impact construction at scale, while addressing embodied carbon in materials.
Slow, uneven rebuilding in the Himalayas after last year’s glacial disaster underlines that resilience is underfunded. Firms working in high‑risk terrain need risk‑informed design, community engagement and adaptable finance embedded in sustainable architecture, green construction and green infrastructure. Life cycle thinking in construction, carbon footprint reduction and rigorous management of the environmental impact of construction must be planned from the outset to support the circular economy and eco‑friendly construction.
With housing output shrinking again, counter‑cyclical public investment is needed to keep the green upgrade pipeline moving. Procurement that rewards circular construction strategies, sustainable construction and sustainable urban development—bundling retrofit with new, renewable heat‑ready projects—can stabilise supply chains and skills while accelerating carbon footprint reduction and sustainability across building and construction.
