On May 9, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore signed Senate Bill 1, adding new consumer protections and regulatory oversight to the state’s retail electricity and gas markets.

Energy justice advocates estimate that the retail choice reform bill will give back $150 million every year to Marylanders and set new market conditions for fair competition. “Those savings will go right back in consumers’ checkbooks because they’re not going to be ripped off year after year after year,” said Laurel Peltier, an energy justice advocate who lobbied in favor of the legislation.
