NOAA has spent 55 years protecting lives from climate disasters, providing real-time weather forecasts and advancing critical climate research. Now, it’s being dismantled—not for the public good, but for profit. We refuse to stay silent. Climate Reality staff joined 12 members of Congress, including two senators, outside the Department of Commerce to demand transparency, accountability, and an end to this reckless privatization scheme. Despite the snowy weather, climate advocates, union workers, and scientists stood together to fight back. This isn’t about efficiency. It’s about shielding polluters, silencing science, and putting our communities at risk. We know the reality—and we won’t back down.

Britain’s £15bn Warm Homes Plan is moving sustainable construction from policy ambition to delivery, positioning retrofit as industrial strategy as well as household energy support. Devolved funding for councils and mayors could strengthen local supply chains, skills and standards, helping energy-efficient buildings become mainstream infrastructure rather than isolated pilot schemes. The success of the programme will depend on stable procurement, trusted local delivery and rigorous lifecycle assessment, with whole life carbon, life cycle cost and building lifecycle performance treated as core measures of value.

The proposed release of “grey belt” land to support a 1.5m-home target raises urgent questions about environmental sustainability in construction. Faster housing delivery cannot bypass whole life carbon assessment, climate resilience, drainage, ecology, contamination risk, transport access or grid capacity. Poor-quality Green Belt is not automatically viable development land, and sustainable building design will require low carbon design, sustainable material specification and credible planning for green infrastructure. Without this discipline, the carbon footprint of construction could rise even where homes meet operational energy targets.

Sweden’s Oceanhamnen district shows how sustainable urban development can move beyond individual low carbon building projects. Its three-pipeline system separates blackwater, greywater and other waste streams, supporting water recovery, nutrient reuse and circular economy in construction principles at neighbourhood scale. As heat, drought and flood risks intensify, circular construction strategies, resource efficiency in construction and end-of-life reuse in construction are becoming central to resilient urban systems.

The direction of travel is clear: net zero carbon buildings must be judged through net zero whole life carbon, not only operational performance. Embodied carbon, embodied carbon in materials, low embodied carbon materials, low carbon construction materials, environmental product declarations (EPDs), BREEAM and BREEAM v7 are becoming practical tools for decarbonising the built environment. Green construction is shifting from marketing language to governance, infrastructure, skills and measurable carbon footprint reduction across the full asset lifecycle.
