Maine’s mini primary kicked off after Graham Platner, who originally won the Democratic nomination to run against incumbent Republican Sen. Susan Collins this fall, withdrew his candidacy, following the July 6 publication by Politico of a rape allegation by a former romantic partner. In the midst of two weeks of intense and unusual campaigning by those jockeying for the lead, an Immigrations and Customs Enforcement officer shot and killed a man in Biddeford, Maine, resulting in outpourings of grief and anger throughout the state and with the candidates. Troy Jackson, a longtime state senator who came in third in the recent Democratic primary for governor, seemingly has an insurmountable lead in support this time around.
