Is there lead in your pipes? Chicago has the highest number of lead water service lines in the nation, with an estimated 412,000 of about 491,000 lines at least partly made of lead or contaminated with the dangerous metal. Service lines are the underground pipes that connect the city’s water main to your home’s internal plumbing. When these and other plumbing materials contain lead, tiny pieces of the toxic metal can dissolve or flake off into the water coming out of your tap. WBEZ, Grist and Inside Climate News have for the first time analyzed city data obtained through a public records request that allows Chicago’s residents to see where the problem is most acute — and how it intersects with poverty and race. Use our map tool to view confirmed and suspected lead service lines across Chicago, alongside distributions of race and poverty. Read more at WBEZ.org, the Chicago Sun-Times, and at the link in bio. Regulatory reform and accelerating climate targets are reshaping sustainable construction. The UK’s upcoming Eurocode revisions and new procurement frameworks are embedding whole life carbon assessment into standard practice. Developers and contractors will be expected to measure embodied carbon and the carbon footprint of construction through transparent lifecycle assessment models that link life cycle cost with performance obligations. The shift moves sustainability from aspiration to compliance, reinforcing environmental sustainability in construction as core to future project delivery.

Digital transformation is redefining sustainable building design. Advanced information management and lifecycle assessment tools now integrate data on resource efficiency in construction and embodied carbon in materials, providing real-time evaluation of whole life carbon, energy performance, and end-of-life reuse in construction. This evolution surpasses conventional BIM by supporting circular economy principles and circular construction strategies that align eco-design for buildings with low carbon design targets.

Operational efficiency is emerging as a major driver of decarbonising the built environment. Research shows that hybrid work models can meaningfully reduce the carbon footprint of construction portfolios by cutting operational emissions from energy-efficient buildings. The focus on net zero carbon buildings and net zero whole life carbon performance reflects a maturing understanding that occupancy patterns carry as much impact as material specification or green building products.

Investment is channelling towards innovation that bridges renewable energy and low carbon building technologies. Funding for fusion and clean power demonstrates how low embodied carbon materials and renewable building materials are connecting energy systems with green construction. The latest guidance on breeam and breeam v7 certification underscores this alignment, combining sustainable building practices with measurable environmental product declarations (EPDs) and verifiable life cycle thinking in construction.

Policy, data, and capital are converging to drive sustainable design grounded in physics, finance, and accountability. Green infrastructure and sustainable urban development are no longer optional extensions but integral to carbon neutral construction. The sector is transitioning towards measurable, science-based sustainability, where building lifecycle performance and environmental impact of construction define competitiveness across global markets.
