Ice cores and satellite images are helping preserve the history of this disappearing ice cap in the Peruvian Andes. 🧊🛰

The retreat of the Quelccaya Ice Cap’s edge is visible with this #Landsat image pair taken between Sept. 3, 1988 and Oct. 22, 2023. The images were acquired with the Thematic Mapper (TM) on Landsat 5 and the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8, respectively.

The video flips back and forth between an image with more white ice and snow in the middle to one with less white ice and more brown land in the middle. The white in the images is the ice and snow covered peaks of mountains. The brown in the images is the land. The land has peaks and valleys.
