Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the Trump administration is “leaning in on maximum production” to address consumer gas costs. “The way to solve a supply shortage is to grow supply,” Wright said on CBS News’ Face the Nation on Sept. 6.
However, oil demand is also part of that problem. In China, the country reduced oil consumption for transportation by 16 percent from April to June through rapid electrification of vehicles, according to a new analysis. And the policies have helped China weather the global runup in oil prices.
Meanwhile, U.S. oil consumption has stayed steady and predictions for U.S. electric vehicle adoption are falling. Analysts say the Trump administration’s retreat on climate and EV policy is making the country more vulnerable to global energy shocks like those being touched off by its policy in the Middle East.

Low‑carbon materials are moving from pilots to procurement. A new white paper urges wider use of responsibly sourced timber as renewable building materials, citing durability, structural performance and large cuts in embodied carbon and whole life carbon. Market signals align: Egger’s acquisition of an Italian wood recycler consolidates circular economy feedstocks, and the Grundon–DTE venture expands recycled aggregates to scale low carbon construction materials for “green concrete”. Viability now hinges on rigorous quality control, standards and transparent data across embodied carbon in materials and the carbon footprint of construction.
Regulatory pressure is sharpening. The Advertising Standards Authority’s action against vague “eco” claims and the Environment Agency’s enforcement on illegal waste and pollution raise the bar for environmental sustainability in construction. Procurement, permits and insurance will expect auditable provenance, environmental product declarations (epds) and demonstrable carbon footprint reduction tied to sustainable construction outcomes and net zero whole life carbon pathways.
- Prioritise timber‑hybrid systems and recycled aggregates within sustainable building design, integrating whole life carbon assessment, lifecycle assessment and life cycle thinking in construction to optimise life cycle cost and building lifecycle performance.
- Specify low embodied carbon materials through sustainable material specification, verified green building materials and green building products, supported by chain‑of‑custody and performance testing aligned to breeam and breeam v7.
- Deploy circular construction strategies to advance the circular economy in construction, including design for disassembly, end‑of‑life reuse in construction and resource efficiency in construction across sites and supply chains.
- Strengthen low carbon design for energy‑efficient buildings and low carbon building delivery, linking KPIs to sustainable design, eco‑design for buildings, environmental impact of construction and decarbonising the built environment.
- Replace soft‑focus marketing with verifiable metrics for net zero carbon buildings and net zero carbon performance, publishing EPDs, whole life carbon results and operational outcomes consistent with sustainable building practices, green infrastructure and sustainable urban development.
- Embed governance that assures low‑impact construction and carbon neutral construction claims are evidence‑based, defensible and aligned with construction regulations and insurer expectations across the building lifecycle.
