Data centers are being proposed near some of Pennsylvania’s most treasured natural spaces. That includes planned sites on land next to state parks, nature preserves and near lakes, streams and rivers that are considered of “exceptional value”—a gold-star designation given by the state to only the purest waterways and wetlands. Some are also being proposed in popular tourist areas, including the Poconos. Developers look for large parcels of land near adequate power supplies or in locations that would allow them to build their own power source—as well as near water, which is needed to cool the computer systems. Data centers are finding all of that in the Poconos. Proponents say the centers will bring construction jobs and increase tax revenue. Residents are worried about the costs, and some experts question the siting. “It does not make sense to put them on top of sensitive ecosystems,” said Daniel C.
