California pesticide regulators allow growers to use nearly three dozen chemicals banned or restricted in countries around the world due to health concerns. Regulators started re-evaluating the fumigant chloropicrin over concerns about unsafe air levels 25 years ago—with no meaningful restrictions.
Chloropicrin, a chemical once used as a choking agent during World War I, is banned in more than 40 countries. In California, agricultural use of the chemical was linked to over 1,000 pesticide-related illnesses between 2000 and 2015, according to a 2019 study in the journal Environmental Health.
“These are people who are experiencing and suffering because of these pesticides,” said Jacob Sandoval, of the League of United Latin American Citizens. “They are farmworkers going to work every day to provide for their families. They are parents worried that their children may be exposed by playing outside.”

Sustainable construction is moving beyond materials, certification and compliance towards climate-resilient infrastructure judged by whole life carbon, life cycle cost and real-world performance. The funding debate around sustainable drainage systems shows why environmental sustainability in construction now depends on treating SuDS, wetlands and green infrastructure as core assets, not optional landscaping. Properly designed drainage can reduce flood risk, manage drought pressure, limit polluted runoff and support sustainable urban development, making lifecycle assessment and building lifecycle performance central to investment decisions.
Water security is becoming a defining test for sustainable building design, eco-design for buildings and low carbon design. Built environments designed to remove winter rainfall at speed are increasingly exposed to summer scarcity, heat stress and nutrient pollution. Whole life carbon assessment must sit alongside resilience modelling, maintenance planning and resource efficiency in construction if projects are to deliver net zero whole life carbon outcomes rather than narrow carbon footprint reduction claims.
Coastal defence work at Ventnor underlines the need for site-specific adaptation as unstable cliffs, rising seas and heavier rainfall challenge historic engineering assumptions. The strongest sustainable design approach will combine hard protection with nature-based systems, circular construction strategies and low-impact construction, reducing the carbon footprint of construction while improving long-term resilience. Embodied carbon, embodied carbon in materials and sustainable material specification will be decisive as clients compare low embodied carbon materials, green building materials, renewable building materials and environmental product declarations (EPDs).
Data centres are emerging as a major pressure point for green construction. Reports linking AI infrastructure to nitrogen oxide emissions from temporary gas turbines, combined with concern over cooling demand, show how energy-intensive buildings can undermine net zero carbon ambitions. Future briefs for energy-efficient buildings and low carbon building assets must prioritise grid capacity, low-carbon backup power, heat reuse and water-efficient cooling from the outset.
The direction of travel is clear: sustainable building practices, circular economy in construction and life cycle thinking in construction are becoming commercial necessities. BREEAM, BREEAM v7 and wider green building products standards will remain useful, yet the market is shifting towards measurable outcomes: net zero carbon buildings, carbon neutral construction, end-of-life reuse in construction and decarbonising the built environment across every stage of design, delivery and operation.
