At Saguaro National Park outside of Tucson, Arizona, researchers with the Society for the Protection of Underground Networks (SPUN) descended into a field of towering saguaro cactuses not to study the cactus, but to sample the soil beneath them. They were looking for mycorrhizal fungi. Though often invisible from the surface, the fungi connect to plants’ roots and act as a highway for nutrients to plants like a saguaro. They are vital to ecosystems around the world, but remain largely understudied, especially in arid regions.
SPUN is looking to change that, but their research requires intact landscapes like at Saguaro National Park, areas under threat from the Trump administration as staff at the National Park Service is laid off and protected areas rolled back.
