As of July 6, the death toll in Venezuela reached 3,535, with 16,740 people sustaining injuries as well as 17,854 individuals displaced without housing due to the earthquakes, according to the country’s official counts. And while geoscientists said the earthquakes were intense, they were also expected. They say the country was overdue for an earthquake as the movement along the active fault lines in Venezuela has a cycle of about 50 to 60 years between major events. In the early hours following the earthquake, citizens were seen pulling their neighbors and relatives out of the rubble and working alongside foreign disaster relief teams to find missing people. Displaced and migrant communities of Venezuelans in the United States also organized collection centers to ship donations, collecting everything from batteries and face masks to sanitary pads and new clothes to ship to La Guaira. “We cannot hide the responsibility of the state at this time; the state must act because that is its duty. When citizens take on these tasks, something is wrong. We must not get used to this,” said Antonio Machado Allison, a first responder for the Venezuelan Red Cross Relief Brigade and an ecologist affiliated with Wesleyan University. 🔗 Read more on our website, linked in our bio ✍️ @avrilsilva03 📸 Getty Images

Revised BREEAM standards are redefining sustainable construction, underscoring that material selection now dictates both environmental sustainability in construction and project accreditation. The update to BREEAM Mat 05 embeds sustainable building design at the earliest project phase, aligning with principles of embodied carbon reduction, resource efficiency in construction, and Whole Life Carbon Assessment. By mandating attention to embodied carbon in materials, design teams are compelled to treat every specification as a determinant of carbon footprint reduction and lifecycle performance.

The intensifying climatic extremes in the UK are transforming sustainable design priorities. Record heatwaves have exposed the fragility of older housing stock, accelerating demand for low carbon design and energy-efficient buildings built to resist prolonged high temperatures. Integrated approaches to net zero whole life carbon, low embodied carbon materials, and eco-design for buildings are now viewed as essential to resilient, low carbon building development that minimises the carbon footprint of construction while protecting occupant comfort.

Regulatory and financial bodies are converging on a shared expectation of quantifiable lifecycle assessment and life cycle cost transparency. This shift validates sustainable building practices as a condition for investment and compliance, advancing the circular economy in construction through strategies such as end-of-life reuse in construction and circular construction strategies. Developers are recognising that net zero carbon buildings and green construction methods form the backbone of carbon neutral construction and sustainable urban development.

The nuclear sector’s move to integrate lifecycle responsibility in projects such as Hinkley Point C highlights that decarbonising the built environment is extending beyond conventional commercial development. Verified lifecycle oversight demonstrates the maturing focus on environmental product declarations (EPDs) and building lifecycle performance. The industry is entering a phase where BREEAM v7, sustainable material specification, and green infrastructure collectively define competitive advantage. The question confronting global construction stakeholders is whether on-site practice can match the accelerating policy drive towards net zero carbon outcomes.
