🌍 16 September marks the @unitednations International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, highlighting its important role in protecting life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation.
🇦🇶 The Antarctic ozone hole typically reaches its maximum extent between mid-September and early October. In 2026, by the end of August, its area was already larger than that of Antarctica.
The hole then grew rapidly, reaching about 25 million km² on 12 September, around 5 million km² above the average for this time of the year.
Forecasts from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) indicate that the extent of the hole may further growth.
These CAMS visualisations show the evolution of the Antarctic ozone hole from 1 August to 12 September 2026.
The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service supports the continuous monitoring of the ozone layer, providing both observations and forecasts.

Sustainable construction in the UK is moving from isolated green construction projects to systems delivery, with grid capacity, planning reform and measurable carbon performance becoming decisive. The Tees Valley agreement for what is expected to be the country’s largest electricity substation underlines the infrastructure required for net zero carbon buildings, electrified logistics, green infrastructure and industrial decarbonisation. Net zero carbon ambitions depend on power networks that can support energy-efficient buildings, renewable growth and sustainable urban development at scale.
Amazon’s £40m all-electric delivery station in Stockton-on-Tees signals a stronger commercial shift towards low carbon building standards and sustainable building design. Its reported 20% reduction in embodied carbon shows how embodied carbon in materials is becoming a core design and procurement issue, not a late-stage calculation. For large logistics assets, whole life carbon, life cycle cost and lifecycle assessment are now central to sustainable design, resource efficiency in construction and the carbon footprint reduction needed to decarbonise the built environment.
Winchester Cathedral’s planned 243-panel solar installation shows heritage buildings entering the retrofit economy without abandoning conservation priorities. The project reflects a wider move towards eco-design for buildings, low carbon design and sustainable building practices that balance fabric protection, operational energy performance and the environmental impact of construction. It also strengthens the case for renewable building materials, low embodied carbon materials, green building products and sustainable material specification in sensitive sites where long-term building lifecycle performance matters.
Proposed reforms to accelerate planning decisions through extra staff, updated rules and digital systems could help unlock low-impact construction, retrofit programmes and carbon neutral construction. Faster approvals will only support environmental sustainability in construction if they prioritise whole life carbon assessment, net zero whole life carbon outcomes, climate resilience and robust evidence through environmental product declarations (EPDs). Assessment frameworks such as BREEAM and BREEAM v7 are likely to gain relevance as clients demand clearer proof of performance.
The National Audit Office warning that public bodies remain at an early stage in tracking climate risks exposes a critical weakness. Heat, flooding and supply-chain disruption are now practical design constraints. The next phase of sustainable architecture and eco-friendly construction will favour organisations able to combine circular economy in construction, circular construction strategies, end-of-life reuse in construction, low carbon construction materials and credible life cycle thinking in construction. Sustainability can no longer function as marketing language; it must be evidenced through whole life carbon, resilient design and transparent measurement.
