Kenoteq’s low-carbon K-Briq has officially entered full-scale commercial production. Comprising more than 90% recycled construction and demolition waste, this innovative product significantly reduces the embodied carbon in materials, cutting emissions by up to 90% compared to conventional clay bricks. As sustainable construction gains momentum globally, the K-Briq exemplifies a shift towards low carbon construction materials that contribute to whole life carbon reduction in the built environment.

Winvic’s work under National Highways’ Sustainable Delivery Framework continues with a new infrastructure maintenance project on the Orwell Bridge. By embedding green standards into long-term civil engineering contracts, this signals an operational shift towards environmental sustainability in construction and demonstrates progressing adoption of sustainable building practices in national infrastructure portfolios.

National Highways has also trialled the transformation of waste vegetation into a viable soil additive, which reduces the carbon footprint of construction-related soil remediation and removes microplastics. As green infrastructure becomes integral to project planning, circular economy in construction practices such as these are redefining how sustainability applies beyond just materials to also include long-term bio-integrity of construction sites.

The UK government’s proposal to increase landfill tax over the next five years is prompting debate. Advocates argue it will incentivise circular construction strategies, encouraging end-of-life reuse in construction and improving resource efficiency in construction waste management. The construction sector must align its life cycle thinking in construction processes with economic instruments that embed sustainability into disposal behaviours.

The EU and China have announced enhanced decarbonisation cooperation frameworks aimed at supporting their respective net zero carbon and just transition goals. These developments are expected to affect global building lifecycle performance standards and bring increased scrutiny to embodied carbon and whole life carbon assessment in major infrastructure and commercial building projects.

Across the global supply chain, the embedding of sustainable design principles is growing. While not construction-focused, investments such as Innocent Drinks’ support for regenerative agriculture highlight an increasing dependency on sustainable material specification and life cycle cost benefits across sectors. This systems-level approach aligns with broader sustainability goals, including decarbonising the built environment.
