Biffa has reached the halfway point in a major hazardous waste removal at the UK’s last coal-fired power station, supporting the journey towards environmental sustainability in construction by safely decommissioning legacy infrastructure. This project aims to reduce the embodied carbon and whole life carbon impact of redevelopment, highlighting the importance of end-of-life reuse in construction and circular economy strategies that lower the overall carbon footprint of construction projects. The Urban Land Institute (ULI) Europe has launched the “C Change for Housing” programme, pushing the real estate sector to address whole life carbon and adopt sustainable building design and low carbon design for new and affordable housing. By uniting leaders across the industry, the initiative sets a new standard for net zero whole life carbon assessment and sustainable construction practices, encouraging the sector to embrace lifecycle assessment and eco-design for buildings to support resilient communities. In the energy sector, the UK’s largest bioethanol plant has raised concerns over the need for state support to avoid closure, with implications for renewable energy supply chains and the availability of low carbon construction materials. The risk to green construction and renewable fuel supply underlines the challenge in achieving net zero carbon targets and the decarbonising of the built environment, especially as sustainable materials and energy-efficient buildings become critical for net zero carbon buildings and infrastructure. A global survey of finance ministries shows that while climate risk is now widely acknowledged, investment in sustainable infrastructure and green building materials is limited by a lack of expertise and tools for robust whole life carbon assessment and life cycle cost analysis. Strengthening financial frameworks to align with life cycle thinking in construction is essential for scaling up circular economy in construction and improving lifecycle performance in the sector. Vantage Data Centers has completed the data centre sector's first Euro-based asset-backed securitisation, securing €640 million for the sustainable construction of highly energy-efficient buildings. This innovative financing approach will support low carbon building and resource efficiency in construction, showing the growing momentum behind green infrastructure and sustainable building practices in delivering high-performance, low-impact construction projects worldwide. Collectively, these developments reinforce the increasing complexity and urgency of advancing sustainable architecture and green building products globally, as the industry continues to adopt practices such as sustainable material specification, environmental product declarations (EPDs), and carbon footprint reduction. The commitment to circular construction strategies and net zero carbon remains central to a more responsible and sustainable future for construction and the built environment.
