The UK energy regulator Ofgem has announced major reforms to fast-track grid connections and remove stalled energy projects. These changes, coming into force by 2026, are expected to reduce delays, save £5 billion in consumer bills, and boost low carbon infrastructure development. This shift supports the adoption of sustainable building practices and the integration of renewable energy systems into new developments. Grid-ready construction sites will be central to advancing green infrastructure and accelerating the delivery of net zero carbon buildings.

Britain has introduced Biodiversity Net Gain into its planning system, requiring developers to ensure construction projects leave nature in a better condition than before. This legal mandate is prompting a shift toward eco-friendly construction that values green infrastructure and ecological restoration. It aligns with broader principles of environmental sustainability in construction and reinforces the importance of lifecycle assessment and sustainable material specification in early-stage planning.

Data from BloombergNEF indicates global data centre energy demand could double by 2050, driven largely by artificial intelligence. This surge may increase electricity use to nearly 9% worldwide. Yet a parallel expansion in renewable energy is anticipated, offering new markets for energy-efficient buildings and environmentally responsible data centres. The construction sector faces growing pressure to deliver designs optimised for operational carbon and to measure the full carbon footprint of construction, using whole life carbon assessment methods.

A record-breaking year of European climate extremes—floods, heatwaves and droughts—has prompted leaders to prioritise sustainable urban development and low carbon design. These events expose vulnerabilities in existing infrastructure, intensifying demand for climate-adaptive buildings and resource efficiency in construction. Policy action and green investment are targeting long-term resilience, advancing circular economy principles and embracing building lifecycle performance considerations across the built environment.

Belgium-based Solvay has launched rare earth production within Europe to reduce supply chain reliance on China. This local sourcing effort supports circular economy in construction and stable access to renewable building materials, key for technologies such as electric systems and wind turbines. Support for end-of-life reuse in construction and carbon footprint reduction through low embodied carbon materials is expected to continue growing across the sector.

Nature restoration at landscape scale is gaining momentum as a sustainable construction strategy. By aligning with natural systems such as watersheds and forest corridors, this approach encourages circular construction strategies and life cycle thinking in construction. Financing models linked to ecosystem regeneration are being developed to meet environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals, fostering a stronger focus on eco-design for buildings and carbon neutral construction outcomes.
