Wrightbus has announced a £25 million investment to increase production of zero-emission buses, a response to the UK’s drive toward sustainable transport and carbon footprint reduction. This expansion supports low-emission public transit and aligns with broader goals in sustainable construction by promoting cleaner urban infrastructure and minimising the environmental impact of construction linked to transport networks. The move underscores the transport sector’s role in achieving Whole Life Carbon reductions within city development.

The International Maritime Organization has approved a landmark carbon levy on international shipping, representing the sector’s first mandatory emissions reduction framework. Although critics argue the targets lack ambition, the agreement introduces a carbon pricing precedent with implications for global material supply chains and port infrastructure. These policies may influence lifecycle assessment and Whole Life Carbon Assessment approaches across construction projects in coastal regions, where shipping contributes to embedded carbon in imported building materials.

San José State University has transformed a former hotel into student accommodation, advancing principles of adaptive reuse and sustainable urban development. By repurposing existing structures instead of initiating new builds, the project reduces Embodied Carbon and supports Circular Economy thinking in civic and educational infrastructure. This model aligns closely with sustainable building practices and offers a replicable approach for developers seeking to limit their project’s environmental impact without compromising functionality or design.

In Portugal, Galp and Powin have commissioned a utility-scale battery energy storage system at Alcoutim Solar Park, strengthening energy resilience in renewable infrastructure. A newly launched Loss and Damage Fund will distribute $250 million in its initial phase to help climate-vulnerable countries repair infrastructures after extreme weather events.
