A new £380 million framework launched by PfH Scotland aims to enhance the sustainability of social housing across Scotland over the next four years. The initiative appoints 38 contractors to deliver planned and cyclical maintenance works, prioritising energy efficiency and sustainable refurbishment. The focus is on improving the existing housing stock, reducing whole life carbon, and aligning with net zero carbon goals. It underscores the growing importance of sustainable construction and low carbon building across public sector frameworks.

The Alliance for Sustainable Building Products (ASBP) has pledged support for the SHELTER project, an academic initiative led by the University of York. The research explores the use of biogenic, renewable building materials such as timber and straw in offsite construction. The project seeks to reduce embodied carbon in buildings while addressing the practical challenges of adopting green building materials. Increasing access to this knowledge could promote widespread adoption of eco-friendly construction methods and contribute to lowering the environmental impact of construction.

A new solar and battery storage report indicates these technologies could add £5.1 billion annually to the UK economy by 2035, given strong policy support. These developments can reinforce green construction by enhancing energy-efficient buildings and supporting low-impact construction techniques in both new developments and retrofits. The contribution to sustainable infrastructure also complements whole life carbon assessment strategies used in sustainable urban development.

Environmental groups welcomed the announced withdrawal of a planning application for the proposed deep coal mine in Cumbria. Concerns over the impact of turbine wakes on offshore wind performance are increasing as developers highlight potential reductions in neighbouring project outputs. Offshore wind forms a key part of renewable energy plans that intersect with sustainable design and construction. Addressing these operational issues will be vital to ensure clean energy sources can scale alongside sustainable architectural ambitions and life cycle cost targets in coastal developments.
