The UK Government has approved the 1.2GW Rampion 2 offshore wind project off the Sussex coast. Featuring 90 turbines and targeting completion by 2030, this renewable initiative is projected to power over one million homes and significantly reduce national carbon emissions. As part of the broader drive towards net zero carbon goals, Rampion 2 enhances energy resilience and contributes to the decarbonisation of the energy sector, reinforcing the role of large-scale renewables in sustainable construction strategies.

In a key development supporting the shift to eco-friendly construction, West Cumbria Mining has withdrawn its application for the Whitehaven coal mine. The proposed deep coal mine faced prolonged criticism due to its projected emissions and inconsistency with net zero carbon policies. This withdrawal is seen as a win for sustainable building practices and reflects the growing resistance to fossil fuel expansion in favour of renewable technologies that minimise Whole Life Carbon and improve Whole Life Carbon Assessment outcomes in the built environment.

An industry report outlines that the UK’s solar and battery storage sector could contribute up to £5.1 billion annually by 2035 with clear policy backing. This potential growth would triple the current economic input and supports the transition to low carbon building practices. Scalable renewable systems like solar and energy storage are critical to reducing the Embodied Carbon of buildings and infrastructure, and to achieving broader goals in Life Cycle Cost optimisation and environmental sustainability in construction.

The Alliance for Sustainable Building Products has partnered with the University of York’s SHELTER project, which is researching the use of biogenic materials such as straw and timber in offsite housing development. These renewable building materials provide benefits including lower Embodied Carbon, improved air quality, and greater alignment with Circular Economy principles. The findings will contribute to evidence-based guidance for sustainable design and green building materials integration in low-impact construction.

Wind energy developers are raising alarms over turbine wake effects caused by wind flow disruption between closely sited offshore farms. As wind turbines grow in scale and number, these interactions risk reducing overall efficiency. Coordinated international planning is needed to optimise the environmental impact of construction related to renewables and to ensure that offshore wind developments contribute effectively to carbon footprint reduction goals across energy-efficient buildings and infrastructure systems.

Cityheart has commenced the second phase of its Stopford Park development in Stockport, adding 122 build-to-rent apartments. Although sustainability credentials haven’t been disclosed, the project reflects the wider trend toward sustainable urban development. Ongoing efforts to embed green construction methods, Whole Life Carbon Assessment frameworks and low carbon solutions in dense housing schemes remain essential to supporting sustainable architecture and long-term climate resilience in the construction sector.
