The UK government has approved the Rampion 2 offshore wind farm, a 1.2GW development consisting of 90 turbines off the Sussex coast. Targeted for completion by 2030, the project is expected to power over one million homes. Rampion 2 supports national net zero carbon ambitions and the expansion of renewable energy infrastructure essential to a sustainable construction future. It also contributes to carbon footprint reduction and the growth of green construction jobs in the UK.

The Alliance for Sustainable Building Products is backing the SHELTER research project, led by the University of York, to promote offsite construction using biogenic materials such as timber and crop-based fibres. These renewable building materials reflect circular economy principles and offer significant reductions in embodied carbon and whole life carbon compared with traditional methods. The initiative addresses key affordability and environmental challenges in UK housing and aligns with broader sustainable building practices.

A new report predicts the UK’s solar and battery storage sectors could add up to £5.1 billion annually to the economy by 2035, highlighting the role of strategic policy and investment. Battery storage enhances grid reliability as renewable sources become dominant. This development reinforces the need for sustainable design and life cycle cost efficiency in energy networks supporting energy-efficient buildings and low carbon building strategies across the construction sector.

Plans for a deep coal mine in Whitehaven, Cumbria, have been withdrawn following environmental opposition. Critics cited its incompatibility with net zero carbon goals and the environmental impact of construction based on fossil fuel use. The decision signals a transition in policy and investment towards renewable alternatives and sustainable urban development, reinforcing the UK's move away from high-carbon infrastructure toward more eco-friendly construction solutions.

Offshore wind developers are highlighting concerns about wind wake effects, where turbine interactions reduce energy efficiency across farm clusters. As offshore projects expand and turbine sizes increase, planning for optimal layout becomes vital. Coordinated approaches will support renewable energy targets while maintaining performance and sustainability across shared marine areas.
