The Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has issued a draft update of its Net-Zero Standard 2.0, significantly reshaping corporate decarbonisation practices. The revised guidelines help companies, including those in sustainable construction and building, to establish clearer and more rigorous net zero carbon roadmaps. The update emphasises greater climate accountability, encourages robust action to lower embodied carbon and whole life carbon, and pushes firms to reduce reliance on offsets.

In the UK, progress towards sustainability reporting advances following the introduction of Sustainability Reporting Standards (SRS). These standards significantly impact construction businesses, compelling them to transparently disclose detailed environmental, social, and governance (ESG) information. Enhanced ESG reporting, including comprehensive lifecycle assessments, enables construction companies to demonstrate genuine commitment to eco-friendly construction and sustainable design practices.

The UK government is considering mandatory adoption of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) guidelines. This development illustrates the increasing global focus on biodiversity and broader environmental sustainability in construction. Adopting TNFD standards would prompt construction firms to integrate nature-related risks into financial planning, thereby promoting sustainable building practices, reducing environmental impact of construction, and aligning with circular economy principles.

Manchester has launched a Hydrogen Skills Framework as part of its sustainable urban development strategy, supporting the region’s ambitious net zero carbon economy goal by 2038. This move benefits construction firms by offering workforce training on renewable energy, notably hydrogen solutions. The industry can leverage this initiative to integrate energy-efficient building methods and renewable building materials effectively into construction and infrastructure planning.

Scientists have raised concerns about the ocean’s reduced capacity to absorb carbon dioxide, currently responsible for absorbing roughly 30 percent of human-generated emissions. This disruption significantly affects global sustainability initiatives, particularly influencing sustainable construction practices near coasts, highlighting the necessity for low-impact construction and careful consideration of lifecycle assessment when approving building projects to minimise environmental impacts.

In Pakistan, the World Bank approved a USD 300 million programme addressing severe pollution and smog in Punjab. While region-specific, the programme underscores the international push towards improved air quality and lowered environmental impacts. This global trend encourages the adoption of carbon neutral construction practices, utilisation of green building materials, and integration of renewable energy technologies into construction, significantly contributing to carbon footprint reduction worldwide.
