Switzerland is positioning itself at the forefront of sustainable construction, where industrial-scale production of low carbon construction materials is reshaping the global market. Holcim’s rollout of low embodied carbon materials marks a decisive point in the evolution of green construction, moving from niche innovation to scalable eco-friendly construction. This transformation reflects a deeper commitment to decarbonising the built environment and achieving net zero whole life carbon performance in energy-efficient buildings.

Across Europe and the UK, policy frameworks are aligning with industrial momentum. The widespread demand for a fair fossil fuel phase-out is accelerating the shift to net zero carbon buildings and low carbon design, integrating whole life carbon assessment and lifecycle assessment into everyday sustainable building design. Governments are embedding whole life carbon metrics within planning systems, using BREEAM v7 certification to track the carbon footprint of construction and guide life cycle cost decisions.

In the UK, workforce adaptation has become central to this transition. Training schemes are fostering sustainable building practices and digital literacy to enhance resource efficiency in construction, supporting small builders and specialists in eco-design for buildings. The shift toward circular economy in construction is strengthened by projects such as Plan B’s material recovery facility in Cardiff, exemplifying end-of-life reuse in construction and circular construction strategies. These developments demonstrate a maturing circular economy where sustainable material specification, green building materials, and renewable building materials underpin carbon neutral construction.

Recycling and environmental sustainability in construction are now central business drivers, not peripheral concerns. With the environmental impact of construction under scrutiny, firms are adopting life cycle thinking in construction to cut embodied carbon and enhance building lifecycle performance. The sector’s direction is clear: sustainability is no longer an adjunct to profitability but its main catalyst, defining the future of sustainable urban development and green infrastructure.
