Firms specifying low carbon design and sustainable building practices can align with BREEAM and BREEAM v7 pathways for environmental sustainability in construction.
Decarbonising heat is being slowed by planning friction and inequitable subsidies, with UK households incurring an estimated £8m since 2015 despite most heat pump applications being approved. Streamlined, consistent rules and targeted support are needed to unlock installers, reduce life cycle cost barriers and accelerate net zero carbon buildings, carbon neutral construction and decarbonising the built environment.
Record heat and reservoirs 18% down are making water stress a design parameter. Low‑water systems, on‑site reuse and drought-resilient landscapes should be standard in sustainable construction and green construction, driving resource efficiency in construction and the circular economy in construction.
Adaptation is entering delivery. Amsterdam’s IJburg demonstrates floating and amphibious typologies as pragmatic, scalable responses for flood‑prone districts, best paired with low embodied carbon materials, renewable building materials, green building materials and end-of-life reuse in construction. Environmental product declarations (EPDs), sustainable material specification and circular construction strategies cut embodied carbon and the carbon footprint reduction of projects while enabling net zero whole life carbon goals.
Policy is tightening. Northern Ireland’s new duty to apply prevention, precaution and polluter‑pays principles steers planning and procurement towards whole life carbon, embodied carbon in materials and lifecycle assessment. Whole life carbon assessment and life cycle thinking in construction will shape low carbon construction materials, green building products and the broader circular economy, improving sustainable design and the environmental impact of construction across every building.
