Firms neglecting adaptation in efforts to mitigate climate impacts are in danger of locking-in long-term vulnerability, experts tell Net Zero Festival 2024
Extreme heat and climate volatility are now core delivery risks for sustainable construction, with 96% of project managers reporting heatwave disruption to programmes this summer.
Strengthening El Niño signals and cascading hazards demand resilience-led sustainable building design that goes beyond code minima. Design teams are deploying whole life carbon assessment and lifecycle assessment to balance embodied carbon, operational energy and life cycle cost across heat, flood and slope stability scenarios, strengthening environmental sustainability in construction and sustainable design choices.
Finance is moving toward pre‑emptive adaptation. A drought‑resilience facility targeting up to $400m and calls for upfront climate aid favour water‑sensitive urban design, reuse and storage, green infrastructure and land restoration with verifiable performance and social value. This aligns with circular economy in construction, resource efficiency in construction, end‑of‑life reuse in construction and circular construction strategies that reduce the environmental impact of construction and the carbon footprint of construction.
Mitigation is advancing through port electrification, with shore power, grid reinforcement and on‑site storage emerging as near‑term packages that cut emissions and support decarbonising the built environment. Low carbon design for energy‑efficient buildings and infrastructure underpins net zero carbon and carbon neutral construction targets, improving building lifecycle performance and driving carbon footprint reduction.
Materials strategy is shifting toward engineered wood panels and other renewable building materials with low embodied carbon, supported by environmental product declarations (EPDs), sustainable material specification and green building materials and products. Escalating input prices are squeezing margins and increasing latent defect risk, with value engineering at risk of erasing embodied carbon gains. The industry response is rigorous assurance, early supplier engagement and digital oversight to curb waste from haul‑road upkeep to fleet utilisation, ensuring eco‑design for buildings, green construction and eco‑friendly construction deliver net zero whole life carbon outcomes. Clients are leaning on BREEAM and BREEAM v7 pathways within sustainable urban development and low‑impact construction to achieve whole life carbon objectives for every building and construction programme.
