Lead pollution directly linked to infant mortality

Environment Journal 9 months ago

Despite centuries of agreement on the health risks from the metal, few researchers have analysed its effects on babies. Now a new NBER Working Paper study at Carnegie Mellon University, Boston College and Hunan University has established a link between lead in the air and infant deaths within th

Decarbonisation is accelerating across sustainable construction as global industries align with net zero carbon goals. Heavy manufacturing is prioritising the reduction of embodied carbon through whole life carbon assessment and lifecycle assessment frameworks that integrate low carbon design and process electrification. The Mission Possible Partnership has highlighted the cement and steel sectors adopting low embodied carbon materials, renewable building materials and eco-design for buildings to minimise the carbon footprint of construction. Transitioning towards net zero whole life carbon requires systematic evaluation of life cycle cost and resource efficiency in construction to secure long-term environmental sustainability in construction and achieve carbon neutral construction outcomes.

In parallel, sustainability models taken from the textile industry are demonstrating how circular economy in construction principles can drive reductions in embodied carbon in materials and support circular construction strategies. These approaches show how supply chain transparency, end-of-life reuse in construction and sustainable material specification can advance sustainable building practices and support eco-friendly construction solutions.

Policy misalignment remains an obstacle. The UK’s National Audit Office warns that unclear climate reporting and the absence of strong incentives for circular economy investment are impairing sustainable building design progress. Analysts criticise the budget’s lack of focus on low carbon building infrastructure, green building materials and BREEAM-aligned benchmarks including BREEAM v7. Without regulatory momentum, advancements in green construction, sustainable urban development and green infrastructure risk fragmentation despite increased voluntary alignment with net zero carbon buildings.

The shift towards sustainable architecture and green building products reflects a deeper industry-wide move to decarbonising the built environment. Stakeholders are embedding life cycle thinking in construction to improve building lifecycle performance and reduce the environmental impact of construction. As governments lag behind, innovation-led collaborations are setting the pace, ensuring that sustainable design and renewable technologies continue to lower carbon footprints across global construction supply chains.
