Applications for new businesses, the number of startups, and the total number of businesses have skyrocketed across U.S. states and counties since 2021.
Sustainable construction is facing a sharper policy test as Kemi Badenoch’s proposed “all-of-the-above” energy strategy combines renewables and nuclear support with new fossil fuel drilling and a planned rollback of planning and environmental rules. Faster consenting may help delivery, but regulatory volatility threatens investment confidence, life cycle cost certainty and the business case for net zero carbon buildings. For developers, contractors and funders, whole life carbon, embodied carbon and whole life carbon assessment will become more important, not less, as project teams try to manage risk across design, procurement, operation and end-of-life reuse in construction.
Circularity is moving further into mainstream built-environment supply chains. IKEA’s second-hand marketplace is not a direct breakthrough in low carbon construction materials, but it strengthens the commercial logic behind the circular economy, resource efficiency in construction and circular economy in construction. If furniture, fixtures and fit-out products are increasingly treated as assets with resale and repair value, pressure will grow for circular construction strategies across façades, interiors and primary materials. Sustainable material specification, environmental product declarations (EPDs), green building products and embodied carbon in materials are likely to become more central to procurement decisions.
Climate resilience is emerging as a core measure of sustainable building design, not a landscape afterthought. Research linking the removal of Indigenous land management in Australia to higher wildfire danger, alongside evidence that rewetted rewilding schemes largely avoided recent fires, underlines the role of green infrastructure in risk reduction. Drainage, habitat restoration, fire resilience and sustainable urban development now sit alongside low carbon design, eco-design for buildings and energy-efficient buildings as essential elements of building lifecycle performance.
Waste enforcement in Scotland, including action on unauthorised quarry disposal and guidance on metal shredder residues, shows that material flows remain under scrutiny. Environmental sustainability in construction is no longer limited to operational energy or net zero carbon claims. The industry is being pushed towards lifecycle assessment, life cycle thinking in construction, carbon footprint reduction and clearer accountability for the environmental impact of construction. BREEAM, BREEAM v7 and other assessment frameworks will increasingly need to reflect net zero whole life carbon, low embodied carbon materials, green construction and practical routes for decarbonising the built environment.
