Sustainable construction is moving from public commitments to measurable delivery, with whole life carbon, embodied carbon and life cycle cost now central to credible decision-making.
The Antalya Compact for Energy Efficient Buildings, launched around COP31, signals a push for shared international expectations on electrification, energy-efficient buildings and building decarbonisation. Its importance lies in comparability: governments, investors and project teams need common metrics if net zero carbon buildings and net zero whole life carbon targets are to move beyond aspiration.
The NBS Sustainable Futures Report highlights the sector’s persistent measurement gap. Firms increasingly understand sustainable building design, low carbon design and sustainable building practices, yet many still lack consistent data across projects. Whole life carbon assessment, lifecycle assessment and life cycle thinking in construction are becoming essential tools for procurement, design and carbon reporting. Without robust methods, claims on the carbon footprint of construction, embodied carbon in materials and carbon footprint reduction remain exposed to selective accounting. Standards such as BREEAM and the forthcoming BREEAM v7 will be closely watched as the market demands stronger evidence on building lifecycle performance.
Practical progress is visible in the retrofit of major existing assets. London’s O2 arena has reduced emissions through efficiency upgrades, renewable power procurement and on-site electric vehicles, showing how low carbon building strategies can work beyond new-build showcases. The retrofit agenda is critical to decarbonising the built environment, as most future stock already exists.
Resilience is rising alongside environmental sustainability in construction. Calls for climate-proof hospitals and early-warning systems in Pakistan, paired with UK arguments for infrastructure as an interconnected system, underline the need for green infrastructure, sustainable urban development and low-impact construction that can withstand heat, drought, flooding and power disruption.
The circular economy is shifting from ethical preference to industrial strategy. WRAP’s estimate of a potential £93bn UK gain by 2035 strengthens the case for circular economy in construction, resource efficiency in construction, end-of-life reuse in construction, circular construction strategies, sustainable material specification, environmental product declarations (EPDs), low embodied carbon materials and renewable building materials. Green construction is becoming a discipline of systems, standards and verified outcomes.
