Europe’s accelerating heat, amplified by Greenland‑linked heat domes and an off‑the‑charts El Niño, is recasting sustainable building design around passive cooling, resilience and energy‑efficient buildings.
Clients are pivoting to eco‑design for buildings and sustainable design that cut whole life carbon and embodied carbon through low carbon design, while progressing net zero carbon buildings and net zero whole life carbon, guided by lifecycle assessment, life cycle thinking in construction and whole life carbon assessment.
On materials, the circular economy in construction is moving from rhetoric to deployment. Geneva’s Quai Vernets—repurposing a former barracks into a NextGen district—uses low carbon construction materials, including low‑carbon cement and recycled constituents, to reduce the carbon footprint of construction, embodied carbon in materials and the wider environmental impact of construction at scale.
Green building materials, low embodied carbon materials and renewable building materials are entering sustainable material specification, evidenced by environmental product declarations (epds). The UK’s appointment of a national deposit return scheme operator signals more reliable reverse logistics for secondary resources, supporting circular economy, resource efficiency in construction, end‑of‑life reuse in construction and circular construction strategies across the supply chain.
Delivery remains the constraint. Insolvencies outpace other sectors, and too many projects are technically sound yet undeliverable amid procurement risk, finance gaps and thin balance sheets. Bankable pipelines now require life cycle cost discipline, building lifecycle performance targets and whole life carbon assessment embedded from brief to handover, aligned with breeam and breeam v7 pathways. Incentives that reward whole‑life outcomes, de‑risk innovation and drive carbon footprint reduction toward net zero carbon outcomes are central to decarbonising the built environment and carbon neutral construction. Firms that integrate sustainable construction, sustainable building practices and sustainable urban development are positioned to lead environmental sustainability in construction through low carbon building, green construction and eco‑friendly construction.
